A New Chapter for Multnomah County Libraries

In November 2020, Multnomah County voters approved a capital improvement bond to modernize and expand library facilities. Midland Library was part of phase one of this ambitious endeavor. The existing 24,000-square-foot building was renovated and expanded with a new 6,000-square-foot addition, allowing the library to change and grow with its community.
 
The library’s design was informed by extensive community input, helping to create a space that reflects the community’s needs, interests and identity. The library features an outdoor interactive children’s garden; spacious learning and play areas; a teen room designed for technology, homework, and creative activities; and an inclusive Gathering Circle inspired by Indigenous practices. It also includes flexible community rooms and an inviting wrap-around outdoor plaza, connecting visitors to the neighboring Midland Park. Enhanced with high-speed internet, an Automated Materials Handling system, and modern self-checkout stations, the library offers increased efficiency and convenience.
 
The vibrant and unique exterior canopy design was inspired by patterns reflecting the lived experiences of community members. The interior color scheme, voted on by the community, draws on the movement of water to create a calming space with soft, natural patterns. The library is LEED Gold certified and incorporates many sustainable features including energy efficient mechanical systems, healthy interior materials, and low-flow plumbing fixtures.
