A New Chapter for Multnomah County Libraries

In November 2020, Multnomah County voters approved a capital improvement bond to modernize and expand library facilities. Holgate Library was part of phase one of this exciting endeavor. At 21,000 square feet, the new Holgate Library is nearly triple the size of the previous building, offering a spacious, inspiring, and modern space adaptable for community use.
 
Extensive community input helped shape the library’s design and character, resulting in a space that reflects the needs and priorities of those it serves. The library features large learning and play areas for children; a teen room with space for technology, homework, and creative expression; and several flexible community rooms. Enhanced with high-speed internet, an Automated Materials Handling system, a Book Locker for easy hold pickups, and modern self-checkout stations, the library redefines convenience and efficiency.
 
Art installations created in partnership with the Regional Arts and Culture Council, including interior and exterior murals, add character to the space, while the interior building color scheme, voted on by the community, brings a touch of nature indoors. The library is LEED Gold certified and incorporates many sustainable features including solar panels, energy efficient mechanical systems, and exposed heavy-timber.
 
Holgate Library has received several notable recognitions, including a 2026 Architizer A+ Awards Library Finalist designation, a 2025 AIA Oregon Honor Award and 2030 Sustainability Award, and a 2024 IIDA Oregon Best in Category award in the Public & Civic category.
