A New Chapter for Multnomah County Libraries

In November 2020, Multnomah County residents voted to pass a capital improvement bond to modernize and expand library facilities. St. Johns Library was part of the final phase of this exciting endeavor.
 
Extensive community input helped guide the library’s design and character, resulting in improvements that reflect the needs and priorities of those it serves. The historic Carnegie building was thoughtfully renovated and complemented by a 2,900-square-foot addition, expanding the library’s capacity while preserving its character. New spaces support learning, connection, and creativity for patrons of all ages, including an educational play area for children and families, flexible spaces for community gatherings, and a teen room for studying, technology, and creative activities. Technology and internet access were also upgraded throughout the library, while new artwork reflects and celebrates the identity of the surrounding community.
 
The interior palette, voted on by the local community, was inspired by the view of Forest Park, blending cool blues and greens with warm tones to reflect autumn leaves. With sustainability features like energy efficient mechanical systems, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and healthy interior materials, St. Johns Library is on track to meet LEED Gold.
