Belmont Library | Portland, OR

A New Chapter for Multnomah County Libraries

  • Completion Date 2026
  • Budget $28.1M
  • Scale 15,000 SF

In November 2020, Multnomah County voters approved a capital improvement bond to modernize and expand library facilities. Belmont Library, one of the County’s busiest libraries, was part of the final phase of this exciting endeavor.

The historic Belmont Library was renovated and expanded with a new 14,000-square-foot addition, creating ample space to serve the growing community. Community input played a central role in shaping the library’s design and overall character, ensuring the renovated library reflects the needs and priorities of the community. The updated library features an engaging educational play space filled with books, games, and learning tools for children and families, alongside flexible meeting areas for community use. Additionally, a teen area provides space and resources for technology, homework, and creative expression. The library also has updated technology and internet access throughout the building, as well as artwork that celebrates the community’s identity.

The interior color palette, voted on by the community, creates a warm and engaging atmosphere for visitors and draws inspiration from a warm evening sunset, blending rich oranges and golden yellows into soothing blues. With sustainability features like mass timber structure and energy efficient mechanical systems, Belmont Library is on track to meet LEED Gold.
