Modernizing Critical Services in Tukwila

  • Completion Date 2020
  • Budget $67M
  • Scale 47,000

In November 2016, Tukwila voters approved a bond to fund the replacement and modernization of their current public safety infrastructure, including a new Justice Center. The design of the Justice Center unites police, court, and emergency operations – services previously scattered across multiple buildings – into one secure, resilient, and efficient facility.

The Police Department wing includes an information and services desk, administrative offices, and high-density records storage. There is also a patrol hub for on-duty police officers, a briefing room and secure evidence lock up. Rather than using an offsite fitness facility, police officers now have access to an onsite gym with space for defensive tactics training, as well as locker rooms.

The Municipal Court features a reception area and improved private meeting spaces to ensure attorney-client confidentiality. The spacious new courtroom includes video conferencing technology, space for interpreters, and accessibility improvements such as a wheelchair ramp up to the witness box. New spaces for court support services allow for the City to expand its innovative case management services and programming for the community.

The Emergency Operations Center is built to modern critical facilities standards and features flexible meeting spaces and technology systems. The building’s central hub unifies departments and staff resource areas with shared meeting spaces and a single staff lounge, breakroom, and outdoor space.

The new Justice Center will help revitalize Tukwila International Boulevard and is located close to Sound Transit’s light rail station, ensuring equitable access for the community to visit the facility and utilize the services available.

The Tukwila Justice Center won the Citation Award for its community engagement and commitment to equity in the 2021 AIA Washington Council Civic Awards.
